Application Guide

How to Apply SoundSoil Products

Our products like LawnMutt, RestoreClay, and Liquid Humate are liquid concentrates designed to improve soil health from the ground up. Here’s how to apply them for best results.

What You’ll Need

  • A hose-end sprayer (like the Ortho Dial-N-Spray or Chameleon)
  • Access to water
  • our product(s): LawnMutt, RestoreClay, or Liquid Humate

Avoid Miracle-Gro-type sprayers and any sprayer that has ever contained herbicide.

Step 1: Estimate Your Lawn Size

Knowing your lawn’s square footage helps you apply the right amount of product.
Quick Method:

  1. Walk the length of your yard, counting your steps.
  2. Walk the width of your yard, also counting your steps.
  3. Most people’s steps are approximately 3 feet long.
  4. Do the math:
    • Steps (length) × 3 = Length in feet
    • Steps (width) × 3 = Width in feet
  5. Multiply length (in feet) × width (in feet) to get your total square footage.

Example:
You walk 20 steps long, so 20 steps × 3 ft = 60 ft
And 15 steps wide, so 15 steps × 3 ft = 45 ft
Total square footage would be 60 ft × 45 ft = 2,700 sq ft

Prefer tech? Use Google Maps or a lawn size app to get an accurate number.

Step 2: Mix Your Product

For most applications, use:

  • ½ to 1 ounce of product per 100 square feet

Think of it like fuel efficiency: newer lawns or problem areas need more frequent and heavier doses. Healthy lawns need less to maintain.

How to Measure 1 Ounce:

  • 1 ounce = 2 tablespoons
  • 8 ounce = 1 cup

Application Tip:

  • Mix your product(s) in the applicator bottle.
  • Add extra water to help with flow and saturation:
    • Small bottle: add 10 oz of water
    • Medium bottle: add 16 oz
    • Large bottle: fill to the top

If using LawnMutt and RestoreClay together, mix both in the applicator and apply them simultaneously. Use everything you mix—do not store leftovers.

Step 3: Apply Evenly

  1. Set your applicator dial to 2 oz per gallon (if adjustable).
  2. Spray evenly across your lawn until the applicator is empty.
  3. If any product is left, go over the area again until it’s gone.
  4. Water the area for 10–15 minutes after applying.

For smaller areas, a watering can or pump sprayer works too. Use ½ oz per gallon of water, and always water after applying.

Clay Soil or Large Lawns?

If your yard is larger than 2,000 sq ft, split the application into sections.
Example:

For 4,000 sq ft:

  • Use 40 oz of RestoreClay + 40 oz of Humate = 80 oz total
  • Divide your lawn into 3 sections (~1,300 sq ft each)
  • Mix 13 oz of each product per section, fill with water, and apply
  • Water after each application

Can I Apply Near Plants or Over Mulch?

Yes! Our products are safe for:

  •  Existing plants
  • Lawns with mulch
  • Pet and child areas (once dried)

Just aim to apply directly to the soil, not the foliage. Watering after helps carry the product down to the root zone.

Application Schedule

  • Initial Repair: Apply every 3–4 weeks for the first 2–4 applications
  • Maintenance: Once improved, apply every 6–8 weeks or 2–3 times per year
